People killed since 7 October 2023 Close Sources: Hamas-controlled health authorities in Gaza / UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) / Israeli authorities Disclaimer: Figures from Hamas-controlled health authorities in Gaza do not distinguish between civilians and combatants, and may periodically be late. Figures from Israeli authorities show that around 1,200 civilians and soldiers were killed in connection with the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. 368 Israeli soldiers have been killed since October 27, 2023. None of the figures have been confirmed by independent sources. The Palestinian figures are updated daily. Figures from Israel are updated at least twice a week. Close More information about the numbers On Friday, the UN condemns the number of civilians who have been killed in Israel’s war in Gaza. They do so after a new report shows that women and children accounted for nearly 70 percent of the thousands of deaths they have managed to verify. – We think this is representative of the total number of people killed, and it agrees with the information from the authorities in Gaza, says OHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani. Israel has not yet commented on the findings in the report. Published list of names of those killed On 16 September, the Palestinian health authorities published a list of the names and identity numbers of around 34,500 people who were killed during the first six months of the war, writes NTB. The list, which is also published by Al Jazeera and Le Monde, is on 649 pages and sorted by age. The first 214 pages contained names of killed children. Photo: Omar Al-Qattaa / AFP The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) has no went through the list and verified the identity of 8,119 of the victims. They believe that close to 70 per cent of them were children and women. The youngest was ten-month-old Noura Walid Abdelsalam Shahine. The oldest victim was 101-year-old Ahmad Ibrahim Al-Tahraoui. The UN requires that the identity of victims be confirmed by at least three independent sources. Verification is very difficult since large parts of Gaza have been destroyed, 90 percent of the inhabitants have been forced to flee, and the Israeli attacks continue. – A gloomy and dramatic reading Catharina Bu, head of the UN liaison, tells news that the new report from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is a gloomy and dramatic reading. – For over a year now, we have seen, in real time, the killing of civilians and violations of international law in Gaza. These offenses may constitute war crimes. Bu believes that the international community must take action and ensure justice for these serious violations of international law.
