If you like entertainment TV, you have probably noticed that there is one thing that often repeats itself. Namely body, skin and nudity. Recently, we have seen Else Kåss completely naked (apart from shoes and socks) in the first program of “The King Commands”. Martin Lepperød pees on himself in “Ikke lov å på hytta”. And in the upcoming season of “24-star Christmas calendar”, among others, Sondre Sundby strips off his upper body. Why is there actually so much body on TV during the day in situations where celebrities want to get noticed? What is the worst thing? – I wanted to shock. That’s what comedian Martin Lepperød says about his peeing stunt in “Ikke lov å le på hytta”. He explains that the idea behind it all was to do the most vile thing he could think of. – There has been a lot of rough and mean in “Ikke lov å på hytta” in the past, so my idea was to top what had been, he chuckles. Martin Lepperød pees on himself in “Ikke lov å på hytta”. He believes that comedians and other TV personalities resort to nudity precisely to create a shock effect. – It is a simple solution to a problem, and there is a short way to laughter and a reaction. And showing the body is not harmful, he says. Total overdrive In the upcoming season of “24-star Christmas calendar”, the participants are tasked with keeping the attention of a 13-year-old girl. Several of the men take off their shirts, including Sondre Sundby. – It has burned into my forehead. What happened was total over-ignition. The competitive instinct simply “kicked in”, he says, laughing. For Sundby, there was no clear thought behind what he did, other than that he had to use the tools he had to get noticed. – So there was a lot that happened during those few minutes there. I did a lot of things, and I did a lot of weird things, he says, chuckling at what he came up with. In retrospect, Sundby realized how comical it would both sound and certainly look: – The funny thing is that when I left the competition, I realized that I had stripped for a 13-year-old girl to get attention, that it should seen by a million people, and that it will be broadcast at Christmas time, he states. He explains that the reason why many people use the body as a joke is because it is something unexpected. – In social situations we wear clothes, so when you take those clothes off or show yourself completely naked, you break a social script. It can make the situation humorous, says Dahl. – In addition, it crosses borders and can break a taboo. For example, showing the pee, or peeing on oneself, he adds. It assumes that bodily functions and grotesque bodies are fundamentally humorous. In the classic carnival of the Middle Ages, poo and pee were something people liked to make fun of. – It was common to show our bodily functions, and turn them into something that could be laughed at, instead of being something disgusting or scary. This can also be seen in today’s society. But there is a fine line between horror and humor. – It is an art of balance, because sometimes attempts at humor can land more on the shock side than the humor side. It really depends on the situation, explains Dahl. Martin Lepperød can also confirm that. The pants are too big, the pee is too small Because setting and context have a lot to say in order to achieve the desired effect. – I don’t stand on stage and pee like that, says Lepperød matter-of-factly. Maybe it would have been funnier if the urine had made a mark on his pants instead of running straight down onto the floor. – There was a blunder there, that the trousers were too big and the pee too small, he says and chuckles again. – But it’s fun when things don’t go so well either. It can also be humorous.
