Horror movies can be terrifying to watch. But the movies at least have an important safety valve – you can have a pillow available when things get too bad. One could therefore argue that horror computer games are even scarier. If you use a pillow, it’s game over. Here are nine excellent horror games that are both extremely scary and easily accessible on current gaming platforms. With bonus points for being brand new. 9 “A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead” Developer: Stormind Games Publisher: Saber Interactive Platform: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S Recommended Age: 16+ OK, it must be mentioned that if you ask your mother to play « Alien: Isolation”, and she says you have “Alien: Isolation” at home, then it is “A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead” she could have meant. But the universe from the movies comes to life nicely in this game. You get a completely new story with new characters. They have to somehow escape the hideous monsters who are blind but have extremely good hearing. Here, the game also gets a lot of bonus points by using your actual microphone. If you cough, you’re dead. The function is excellent, but fortunately also optional. At the same time, there are probably many horror games that deserve the place on my list better. 8 “Little Nightmares I & II” Bandai Namco Entertainment Developer: Tarsier Studios Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment Platform: PC, Playstation, Xbox, Switch Recommended Age: 16+ Don’t be fooled by the dollhouse-like environments, the two “Little Nightmares » games are both extremely creepy and downright disgusting. We travel into cruel and abstracted traumas (with, among other things, chefs and teachers as the starting point for the monsters), and the brilliant story gets a fantastically good conclusion in game number two. 7 “Resident Evil Village” Photo: Capcom Developer: Capcom Publisher: Capcom Platform: PC, Playstation, Xbox, Switch Recommended age: 18+ Naturally there must be a “Resident Evil” game on the list, and then I choose the one that is likely is my favorite in the series – “Resident Evil Village”. After revolutionizing survival horror with this series’ inception in the 90s, now Capcom is back in great form. Vampires, werewolves, swamp monsters and whatever you want to call that thing await you in the home of Donna Beneviento. I also recommend “Resident Evil 7” and the remakes of the second, third and fourth games in the series! 6 “Dead Space” Photo: Electronic Arts Developer: Motive Studio Publisher: Electronic Arts Platform: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S Recommended age: 18+ Last year the brilliant 2008 game “Dead Space” was resurrected in a new version that really sparks flew off. We are in the same territory as the “Alien” films here, with a lonely struggle for survival in a spaceship populated by terrible monsters. The horror is more merciless and brutal than in “Alien: Isolation”, but all the gore is combined with an absolutely wonderful feeling of constantly being in mortal danger. 5 “Signalis” Signalis Photo: Humble games/playism Developer: rose engine Publisher: Humble Games/Playism Platform: PC, Playstation, Xbox, Switch Recommended age: 16+ Lista’s coolest and most stylish game is undoubtedly “Signalis”. Here, the German designer duo Yuri Stern and Barbara Wittmann have in a way interpreted and created their own version of games such as “Resident Evil” and “Silent Hill”. The aesthetics and playability are a direct homage to horror games from the Playstation 1 era. The story has hints of the darkest side of Japanese manga and there is an atmosphere throughout that is both creepy, exciting, packed with metaphors and very, very cool. 4 “Lethal Company” WELFARE: The game’s design makes the surroundings feel very real, says news’s reviewer. Zeekerss Developer: Zeekerss Publisher: Zeekerss Platform: PC Recommended age: Not classified (approx. 16+) “Lethal Company” is one of the scariest you can play today. Your job is to land on nightmare planets to collect items to sell, while hideous monsters kill your team one by one. But it’s also one of the most fun things you can play today. Here you cooperate with other players, preferably friends. When things go wrong, and they do, it becomes a hysterically festive sitcom. 3 “Alan Wake II” Developer: Remedy Entertainment Publisher: Epic Games Publishing Platform: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S Recommended Age: 18+ Last year’s best game (in my opinion) presents a horror world that mixes Stephen King, Twin Peaks, gorgeous Finnish humor and pitch black darkness. Since its release, Remedy has also released three expansions, the last of which – “The Lake House” – just came out. The universe is more closely linked to the developers’ other big game universe, “Control”, which gives the game a bigger and weirder register of horror to play on. A unique, incredibly creative and extremely scary experience. 2 “Alien: Isolation” Developer: Creative Assembly Publisher: SEGA Platform: PC, Playstation, Xbox, Switch Recommended age: 18+ Have you ever wanted to star in “Alien”? The answer to that should really be no, but what a game “Alien: Isolation” is! Here you control the role of Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Sigourney Weaver’s character in the films, who tries to find out what has happened to her mother. She quickly finds herself on a spaceship – all alone, you might say – while being hunted by the monster we know from the movies. This is not an action game, it is psychological horror of the worst kind. 1 “Silent Hill 2” Photo: Konami Developer: Bloober Team Publisher: Konami Platform: PC and PS5 Recommended age: 18+ Here the classic horror game “Silent Hill 2” from 2001 has been refurbished and modernized to scare a new generation. And what an experience it has been. James Sunderland arrives in the town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his wife. Who has been dead for three years. Thus begins a journey into a nightmare with perhaps the best story, the most horrific monsters, the most horrifying themes and the most disgusting environments this genre has seen. The best horror game of all time? I mean it! PS: A list of the best modern horror games is not complete without also mentioning the excellent “Amnesia” series, which in many ways sparked a new interest in the genre in 2010. Both “Amnesia: The Dark Descent”, “Amnesia : A Machine for Pigs” and “Amnesia: The Bunker” should be checked out! As some bonus tips, I can also mention that Norwegian horror games have made a name for themselves in recent years, including “Draugen”, “Mørkredd”, “Among the Sleep” and “The Park”. I would also recommend horror game enthusiasts to check out the wonderful and quirky “Doki Doki Literature Club” (available for free on Steam, among others). Finally: If you want a milder horror experience, the “Luigi’s Mansion” games on Nintendo Switch could be an option. Hello, game friends! I am a freelancer and write about games for news.
