Besseberg receives full appeal processing in the Court of Appeal – news Buskerud – Local news, TV and radio

Anders Besseberg was sentenced to three years and one month in prison for gross corruption from his time as head of the International Biathlon Union (IBU). Økokrim won on nine out of ten points in the indictment. Now he has won the appeal, and the case is being heard again in the Court of Appeal, VG was informed by Borgarting on Monday afternoon. Besseberg has always denied criminal guilt and appealed the verdict on the spot in Buskerud District Court in April 2024. – Disagree with the result Mikkel Toft Gimse, one of Besseberg’s defenders. He says the following to news: – It is an extensive case with many accusations. And when you disagree with the result as much as Besseberg and we do, it is only natural that you get a new and thorough examination of the result reached by the district court. – Now Økokrim would like to have a written treatment. Why would it have been unfortunate with such a follow-up to this case? – A pure, written treatment of the appeal case would not have been sufficient in this case. Because there are many witnesses who explain themselves. And a great deal of the case is about what Anders Besseberg thought and understood and meant. That is not sufficiently covered from the documents in the case. Mikkel Toft Gimse is one of Anders Besseberg’s defenders. Besseberg’s lawyers had argued for this, while the prosecution insisted on limited processing of the appeal. – What would you possibly do differently this time? Will there be more witnesses, fewer witnesses, other witnesses, for example? – It is an assessment that we are starting with now. So we will start the preparation now as soon as we have learned that the appeal was accepted, and work until the appeal is processed, says Gimse. Besseberg is satisfied When asked if there will now be at least as extensive a trial as the last time it went on for several weeks in Buskerud District Court, Gimse replies: – First and foremost, Økocrim has to answer that. Because the presentation of evidence in the district court was mainly carried out by them. And it is still Økokrim’s witnesses who will probably be the main part of the witness list. Then it might happen that you manage to cut something down. Anders Besseberg has waited a long time for this decision from the Court of Appeal whether the appeal would be accepted and there would be a new trial. – What did he say when this became known? – Besseberg is naturally satisfied with this. So it wasn’t very unexpected. He thought this was the only right thing. In the judgment against Besseberg, it was consistently established that he received benefits that were improper (reprehensible) when he was IBU president. The indictment dealt with matters in the years 2009 to 2018. Besseberg was only acquitted of an exchange of watches and a single offer of prostitutes.
