– It was expected, as the case was at the forefront, says lawyer Nils Anders Grønås to news. He is the defender of one of the four girlfriends who were accused of raping a fifth girlfriend at a party. They allegedly did this by forcing her to use a Womanizer, which she had received as a birthday present that evening. The one friend also allegedly fingered her and performed oral sex. At the same time, the three other girlfriends are said to have held the victim by the arms and legs. The 19-year-olds have denied guilt throughout, and believed that what happened was voluntary. – My client is very satisfied with the verdict, says Grønås. It was VG who first mentioned the outcome of the verdict. – Disappointed The friends grew up in the same rural environment in Southern Norway, and celebrated the victim’s 17th birthday when the rape allegedly occurred. But the friends disagree as to whether what happened at the birthday party was voluntary. – We see here how strict the criminal law’s evidentiary requirements are, and how difficult it is to win. In a case where it is four against one, it has been nice to see that the police have dared to press charges at all, says public prosecutor Åshild Schmidt to news. Assistant lawyer Åshild Schmidt. Photo: Per-Kåre Sandbakk / news She says that it has been important for the victim to explain what happened. – Even though she is disappointed, she is happy that she was able to explain herself, says Schmidt. – Is it appropriate to appeal? – I think this case is closed now, says Schmidt.
