It was 29-year-old Karla Dana who was found dead in the sea outside Stad after the boat “Naddoddur” sank on Tuesday evening. Dana was part of an expedition that was supposed to sail from the Faroe Islands to Trondheim. In a presentation of the crew on the expedition’s website, Dana is presented as an explorer and researcher. She has a background in the technology industry in the USA, but was now an archeology student at a university in Scotland. Here she worked, among other things, with research on Vikings. According to the police, she was an American citizen, but the expedition writes that she had a Mexican background. The 29-year-old was the youngest member of the crew on the boat, which consisted of a total of six people. Four of them were from Switzerland, one was from the Faroe Islands and one was from the USA. – We express our deepest condolences to the deceased’s family and relatives, the US State Department told BBC News. The aim of the expedition was to recreate the journey of the discoverer, Nadodd. He was a Norwegian who saw Iceland for the first time around the year 860. There she made no secret of the danger of traveling across the North Sea. “It’s hard to keep the excitement from turning to fear when you see these waves casually tossing around huge modern boats playing. But there is a wild beauty in the North Sea, a reminder of the raw power of nature, and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of this adventure.” She expressed that the journey was a way to get to know Viking culture better: “More than just a physical journey, this expedition is a chance to immerse myself in Viking culture in a way that few people ever experience. It is a rare opportunity to honor their legacy and walk – or rather, sail – in their footsteps.” After the death, several people met at the boathouse at Tvøroyri in the Faroe Islands, where the Viking expedition started.
