Climate activists blocked the Kårstø processing plant – news Rogaland – Local news, TV and radio

– We don’t like it when the fossil fuel industry takes away people’s lives, said the Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. – We are tired of empty words and greenwashing. Together with demonstrators from Extinction Rebellion, she blocked an entry gate into Kårstø. Demonstrators also came to sea. Activists also brought eight kayaks and three motorboats into what is called the safety zone at the plant, according to the organization itself. Sørvest police district informs news on Saturday evening that there are no longer any demonstrators left at Kårstø. The police have also left the scene. A smaller boat from the Coast Guard went out to meet the activists. It is described as Europe’s largest processing plant on land for gas and light oil. Every day, gas worth approximately NOK 400 million will pass through the facility. A shutdown could have consequences for gas deliveries to Europe. On Saturday evening, the operation of the facility continued as normal, according to Equinor. The facility is owned by Gassled. Gassco is the operator and Equinor is the operating manager. Security was increased at the facility. Photo: Gisle Jørgensen / news Thunberg: – There is no plan for phasing out The action from Extinction Rebellion took place two days before the ONS energy conference starts in Stavanger next week. According to Extinction Rebellion, this is the first time Greta Thunberg has campaigned against Norwegian oil and gas. – There is no plan whatsoever to phase out fossil fuels at anywhere near the rate required to avoid the worst consequences of the climate crisis, Thunberg said. – We are in an acutely escalating climate crisis. The police had arrived in Kårstø shortly after 10 o’clock. Photo: Gisle Jørgensen / news An Equinor employee was involved in the action The action must have been planned for several months. A geologist employed by Equinor was also involved. – Despite the fact that I am very happy in my job, I am here because the situation is so serious and far too little is being done. I am worried about my children’s future. We need Equinor and the politicians to draw up a plan for the phasing out of oil and gas now, says Equinor geologist Daniel Sollien. – I have thought about this for many years, but now it is very easy. That is correct. I know that, says Sollien. Daniel Sollien normally works for Equinor. Now he is campaigning against the employer. – To look up without seeing what is happening and without doing anything about it and trying to give it attention, I could no longer do that. So that’s why I’m sitting here, he says to news. Photo: Gisle Jørgensen / news Thunberg on geologist: – Brave – There are many in the industry who are uneasy about the change. It is very brave to lead with an example like Daniel, says Greta Thunberg to news. Gassco, which is the operator of the plant at Kårstø, told news earlier on Saturday that they were aware that the climate activists were at the plant. Communications director Randi Viksund then said that the facility was in operation, but that they were monitoring the situation. Climate activists from Extinction Rebellion were in what is defined as a safety zone outside the Kårstø processing plant.
