A tribute band is not unusual in the world of rock. The tribute band Igjenting has been started in Sandnes. Nothing is the original band. Nothing is a rock band that started in the late 80’s and they are still releasing music. Often the name, logo and marketing of tribute bands are close to the original. And there are several things that are not exactly the way they were before. Igjénting was established in 2023. The band consists almost exclusively of members who played in Ingenting between 1987 and 2022. Ingenting Ingenting is a rock band from Sandnes in Rogaland. The band was started in the late 1980s, and released their first album in 1991. The band is particularly well-known in Rogaland, but has played all over the country and sold a total of 120,000 albums. In 1998, the band disbanded, only to be reunited a few years later. Some of their best-known songs are “Liden”, “HIV positiv” and “Døden er sämden ein mann”. – It’s fantastic to play old songs again, says Bård Schanche, guitarist in Ingenting until 2015, and current member of Igjenting. Since their inception in 2023, they have held several sold-out concerts. But now Ingenting is threatening the tribute band Igjenting with a lawsuit. – I don’t understand why they react, says Schanche. The difference between the two logos is some letter changes. Illustration: news They demand that both the name and the logo of the band Igjenting cease. “If this demand is not met, it must be assumed that our clients will take legal action against the band members in Igjenting”. This is revealed in a letter from the law firm Acapo to the tribute band. – They could have spoken to us before we received the letter. It’s just a joke, says Schanche. The use of the name and logo Igjenting believes entails a risk that the turnover circle will mistake the bands, or wrongly assume that there is a connection between them. – The whole point of a tribute band is that it should play on being similar to the original band, says guitarist Schanche. According to her, conflicts between bands and tribute bands have not been dealt with in the courts before. And so Igjenting got the letter. – We have seen quite a few conflicts. Photo: news The lawyer says that in Norway we have no special rules when it comes to tribute bands. They are free to play the songs they want. As long as the performance is faithful to the original. – The problem arises when the tribute band has to market their concerts. Then they cannot use a name or logo that may conflict with the trademark rights of the original band. She says the case of Nothing and Again is an interesting issue. – Many people think that tribute bands are just cool. Very often they can coexist nicely without any problems.
