60,000 first-graders will start school – happy about new curriculum – news Buskerud – Local news, TV and radio

– I’m looking forward to it, most of all, but I’m also a little bit excited, says teacher Synøve Gjerde. She looks down at first-grader Jenny Linnea Borge Midtskogen (6), who is drawing with marker in a new notebook. – Excited too? The 6-year-old looks in amazement at what will become her teacher. Then she says loud and clear: – I’m really, really, really looking forward to it. In the last five years, there have been 2,000 fewer first-graders in this country, but today just under 60,000 6-year-olds start school. Are you looking forward to or dreading your first day of school? What were you wearing? Tell us what you remember at the bottom of the case. At Steinberg School in Drammen, Jenny Linnea Borge Midtskogen, Alina Myrberg Løken, Dennis Boye-Hansen and Mia Hansen Hole will be in the school’s only first grade. There are 22 students in the class, and they have heard what they will be learning in the next few years: Jenny (6) is looking forward to learning English most of all, but thinks she must learn to read cursive as well. Dennis (6) knows that he must learn to count. The fingers can be good to have. Plus, English and minus, Alina (6) plans to learn at school. The children should play more Teacher Synøve Gjerde is well equipped to welcome a new 1st class. For 23 years she has been a teacher, and she has had first class 12 times. A lot has changed, but she is happy that the game is more back in teaching in the first grade. The wind is about to turn, Gjerde believes, and she is happy about that. Mia, Dennis, and Jenny quickly grow impatient. They quickly want to play when things get too sedentary. She believes that many teachers have hardly dared to play, because there have been so many demands to learn how to write and calculate. – The children must also be able to play. Play is the children’s way of learning, she says. Mia, Jenny and Dennis long for the exciting school yard. Photo: Caroline Bækkelund Hauge / news Tablets Many parents are concerned that their children should only use tablets in class. At Steinberg school, Dennis, Jenny, Alina and Mia will eventually be given tablets, but teacher Synøve reassures: – There will be books, books and iPads. Here there is nothing either or in the reading and writing training. We will start with the iPad eventually, but it is only a fraction of the school education. According to the Primary School Information System (GSI), 63 per cent of pupils in 1st grade used tablets last year, and there are large geographical variations in whether pupils get their own tablet when they start school. The four 6-year-olds are absolutely sure that they will read in books when they start school. – I can only read capital letters, says Jenny, who is looking forward to learning to read properly. When they start school, Dennis and Jenny will have colorful books to read in. Not just tablets. Photo: Caroline Bækkelund Hauge / news – What do you like best, book or tablet? Dennis is clear: – Book, as there are much more fun things in books. The biggest challenge Schools all over the country must use the first time to make the first-graders safe. The transition is big for the little ones, and there will be many unfamiliar faces. – Many people think that the biggest challenge for a 6-year-old is sitting still, but we don’t sit still that much, says she, who has 22 little ones in the class. – It is independence and taking others into account that will be the biggest challenge for the little ones. – And for you as a teacher? – You have to really see everyone all the time. Make sure everyone gets equal attention. They are so different. Some are not interested in school, while others can already read. It is a challenge. All the 22 children in the class must receive equal attention. Photo: Caroline Bækkelund Hauge / news It is now that the new life begins. For ten years, the first-graders will be part of the Norwegian school. Ten years of good and bad. There will be laughter and tears, but now there is primarily excitement and anticipation. – On the first day of school I will wear green trousers, says Jenny. – I have a sweater with letters on it, says Dennis. – Have you bought a bag? The answer comes quickly: – Football bag. Tell us about your first day of school here: Hello! Welcome to dialogue at news.
