– It looks good this year – news Innlandet – Local news, TV and radio

– We are a bit early, but it is good to start, says farmer Olav Vold at Staur Gård in Stange. Last year, this year’s grain harvest was referred to as the worst ever. Drought and floods were blamed. But this year there are other forecasts about what the autumn will be like. – I think it looks good this year, says the farmer. She agrees that things look good this year, and says it is good to have slightly better crops than last year. – It’s kind of funny that it doesn’t look so dark, like it was last year, and that you see a little brighter how the weather plays with you. More optimistic this year Several farmers were in despair last year. First there was drought in the early summer and eventually the extreme weather “Hans”. The grain harvest ended at 785,000 tonnes, down 45 percent from the previous year, according to Statistics Norway (SSB). A farmer news spoke to showed that almost the entire cornfield was in water. The grain was filled with sludge, discolored or not suitable for use, according to the farmer. This is what it looked like with a farmer news met last year. And even a month later, several are optimistic. Vegard Ekker in the Norwegian Agricultural Advisory Service (NLR) says he thinks almost all the places in the country where grain will be grown this year look good. – We deliver crop forecasts and we have put ourselves slightly above average, he says and adds: – Regardless of whether it is spring or autumn grain, we are optimistic. At least considering last year, we are betting that it will be a good grain year, he says. Vegard Ekker in the Norwegian Agricultural Advisory Service (NLR) says that it looks generally good throughout the country. Photo: Knut Røsrud / news It’s important to have good weather Ekker in NLR say they are completely dependent on the weather to get as much food grain as possible. And it is important that things go well for the farmers. – It is extremely important, both financially and in terms of motivation. Costs are rising in agriculture, so the fact that grain farmers get a good crop now is the alpha and omega for whether people will continue and not rent out the land. Daughter Ingrid Vold drives the threshing machine. For farmer Olav Vold, the extreme weather “Hans” was not a big problem, because he collected all the grain before the extreme weather. Photo: Knut Røsrud / news At Staur farm in Stange, threshing of the grain is well under way. – The food grains need some heat and good weather to get protein, but all in all, I think this is going well. We are still relatively early and I see this positively, says farmer Olav Vold. Ingrid Vold and Olav Vold say they are completely dependent on good weather to get a good grain crop. Photo: Knut Røsrud / news It is daughter Ingrid Vold who drives the large threshing machine on the farm. She is excited for autumn. – It will be very busy, I expect. It’s a bit weather dependent again, but if we get good weather, it will be a fun but busy few days. Published 16.08.2024, at 05.43
