Although neck and shoulder pain can occur suddenly for some people, the pain usually comes on gradually – often due to poor sitting positions at work. According to the NHI, you can do a number of exercises to prevent such ailments. The most important advice is to stay active and take short breaks in your work to move around. Here is some advice from NHI to prevent neck and shoulder pain as a result of poor sitting positions at work. Give your eyes a break from the screen. According to the NHI, every 20 minutes you should look at a point approximately 20 meters away for at least 20 seconds. If you have a window, it’s a nice change to look out. If you spend a lot of time on the phone, you should avoid leaning your head to one side, so that you squeeze the phone between your ear and shoulder. Use a headset instead – and you free up your hands at the same time in case you need to take notes. According to the NHI, high heels should also be avoided, because they can change the body’s balance point and cause the body to compensate by shooting the head forward, which strains the neck muscles .If you have to use a bag or rucksack, you shouldn’t carry too much. Then you should rather go for a rolling suitcase or something similar. Don’t throw a heavy bag or rucksack over one shoulder either, is one of the pieces of advice from NHI. Also ensure that you are sitting comfortably during your free time, when you are lying down, eating, watching TV or using your mobile phone. The most important thing is to vary the sitting position. It is also important to find out whether there may be psychological reasons for your tension. In many cases, you tense your muscles without realizing it. – There is no quick and effective treatment for neck pain, explains Skonnord.
