Chasing a historic Olympic final in the 400 meters – Olympics Paris 2024

– It’s absolutely sick, shouted mum Unn Merete Jæger when the final place was secured. Then a delighted daughter came to an interview with news. – It is absolutely sick, I have no words. I am very happy. Surrealistic is a good word, smiles Henriette Jæger. She advanced to the Olympic final on time after finishing third in her heat. She is the first Norwegian woman to reach an Olympic final in the 400 metres. On the screen she saw pictures of an ecstatic mum. – Oh mother, “oh my goodness”. Mom is the cutest ever. WE have had that journey together. She has trained me since I was four years old, says Jæger. Now she has the plan for the final ready. – It is to attack like all races, I have nothing to lose. I must aim higher. The goal is not to come last. MOTHER AND DAUGHTER: Unn Merete and Henriette. Photo: NTB Jæger opened the semi-final offensively, and fought hard throughout the race. On the run, she passed the strong Dutchman Lieke Klaver. Klaver has previously won EC bronze in the 400 metres, and took Olympic gold in the 4×400 meter mixed relay earlier in the Olympics in Paris. – I would not have thought this in my wildest imagination. I am so proud. Imagine that my little Henriette is in the Olympic final. It’s absolutely wild. I am completely speechless, says a tearful mother to news. At the finish Jæger was in 3rd place with a time of 50.17. Only the two best go directly through on time, and the Norwegian hopes had to wait anxiously through the next two semi-finals. – I am delighted, it was great and more than I expected. She takes the scalp of big names, said Unn Merete Jæger before it was clear that there would be a final. Jæger’s personal record for the distance is 49.85, set in Switzerland earlier this year. Salwa Eid Naser won the semi-final where Jæger ran. – I think she manages this very well. She doesn’t start too hard and then she has strength left at the end. and manages to pick up the run here. It’s incredibly good, says the mother about the race. Jæger is also part of the Norwegian 4×400 meter relay team. Trial heats start at 10.40 Friday morning. You can watch the race on news 1.
