– Make America Laugh Again! Come and buy! The T-shirt sellers outside the arena, where Kamala Harris and Tim Walz will soon meet voters, offer their latest designs. The new vice-presidential candidate, Tim Wals, is grinning from ear to ear. Photo: Tove Bjørgås – We just made this one, explains Jake, who has a trolley full of various unofficial Harris effects. The variation on Donald Trump’s slogan, Make America Great Again, sums up the mood at the public meetings Harris has held so far in his election campaign. Many voters I have spoken to say they feel real joy for the first time in a long time. A happy couple – Thank you for giving us back the joy, Tim Walz exclaimed as he was about to brag about his new boss in Philadelphia on Tuesday. Despite the fact that the criticism of Donald Trump and his vice-presidential candidate JD Vance had a sting in the speeches of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, there was also laughter at the first public meeting of the Democrats’ new couple. Harris and Walz seem to share a personality trait. Both smile and laugh a lot. At the beginning of the election campaign, there were several in the commentariat who criticized Harris’ laughter as tiresome. But could it be about to become an important weapon in the fight against Donald Trump? A T-shirt plays on Trump’s slogan “Make America great again.” Photo: Tove Bjørgaas / news Humor or sarcasm Trump has always used humor in his political speeches. He often makes sarcastic comments that make the audience laugh. He also loves to give his opponents nicknames. Not unexpectedly, Harris has been called “Laffin Kamala.” The sarcastic humor technique of Trump has made him difficult to debate against. Now it may seem that Kamala Harris is trying to meet him on home soil. With a smile and a laugh, she explains to voters how she wants to hold Trump accountable for what he is accused of. Even when Trump makes attacks that tend towards the racist, she has a smile on her face. In Tim Walz, she has got a partner who combines attacks on opponents with jokes the audience laughs at. There were wide smiles on both newly elected presidential candidate Kamala Harris and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz when they appeared together on Wednesday night. Photo: Matt Rourke / AP Sofasex commentary In Philadelphia, he was rather harsh in his criticism of the man he hopes to meet in debate, JD Vance. Trump’s vice president often comes across as serious, and almost angry, in his criticism of the left and of America’s elites. Tim Walz was sarcastic in his characterization of his rival. The two have similar backgrounds from simple rural conditions in Ohio and Nebraska, respectively. – Like all the regular people I grew up with in the middle of the US, JD studied at Yale and had his career funded by billionaires in Silicon Valley, said Walz. He didn’t give up there. Walz added that he is looking forward to meeting Vance for debate – if he is willing to get off the couch. The audience howled with laughter afterwards. The couch is an allusion to an untrue comment on X, July 15, which suggested that JD Vance had once had sex with a couch. With less than 90 days until the election, the presidential and vice-presidential candidates must charm as many people as possible. Photo: ANDREW HARNIK / AFP Will the humor work? Americans of various political persuasions will undoubtedly appreciate Harris and Walz’s humor. On the right, many see it as sarcastic attacks. In the same way as the left assesses Trump’s sleazy comments. Among the Democrats, there are many who praise Harris’ first two weeks as a presidential candidate. They think she has done a lot right. With Tim Walz, she has taken a different path in choosing a vice-presidential candidate than many had expected. – In him she has found a warm and good-natured guy from the middle of the USA who probably has neighbors with red Trump caps, but invites them for a beer, nevertheless, said a commentator on CNN on Tuesday. The opinion polls show that Harris has closed much of the lead Trump had in some of the decisive states where the election will be decided, but Harris still has to work hard if she is to win. – We are the challengers in this election campaign, she said in Philadelphia. Freedom is her motto. She promises the middle class freedom by ensuring lower prices and opportunities to succeed in the housing market. And she promises women freedom to decide over their bodies and maternity leave and cheaper daycare. For Harris, however, it will take more than a smile and a joke to convince voters that she will be able to pursue a different policy than Joe Biden has done. And Harris only has 91 days to go. But as Tim Walz said with a big smile in Philadelphia: – We have 91 days to go. My goodness, so simple. We can sleep when we’re dead! Published 07/08/2024, at 07.04
