Around six o’clock on Saturday morning, Victoria Weiseth got into the car to drive the usual route to work. For a millisecond she closed her eyes because she was yawning, and then encountered an unusual sight on the long stretch in the 80 zone in Tøvika, which is in Averøy municipality. – I had to brake suddenly, because I saw something big, long and horizontal in the middle of the road. I had to quickly decide whether I should hit the end of the tree, or drive into the ditch and risk major damage to both myself and the car. Because there was a tree lying in the roadway. Photo: Victoria Weiseth Thought she was going to die – I don’t think it fell from natural causes. I can’t be a hundred percent sure, but it looked like someone chopped it down with an axe. It was so nice and right in the road, says Weiseth. The 24-year-old therefore hit the tree at approximately 60 kilometers per hour. She suffered no physical injuries herself, but there is more damage to her car. – Parts of the front fender were broken, chassis parts were destroyed, and my wheel was destroyed. We are asking for tips to find out what has happened, and whether anyone has made observations in the area – or knows of this. That’s what Eivind Klokkersund in the police says. There is an 80-kilometre speed limit at the site. It is something the police take seriously, he says and continues: – We know of similar cases in the past. We will investigate and try to find out what happened, and whether anyone had anything to do with this. – Clearly cut down with an axe. Olav Raanes (18) also came across a tree in the roadway. But then there were two trees, and it was around 01-02 in the morning. – I was on my way home, then I come over the top of the hill and see a tree in the way. I was scared, and had to react quickly and slow down quickly. Photo: Olav Raanes He says that he waited a while to get out of the car, because he thinks the whole incident was so strange. – And then I see a car coming towards me, so I flashed my high beam to warn. We went out together, and moved both trees out of the way. Raanes is also surprised that the one tree was back on the road at 06 in the morning, and thinks someone must have moved it back onto the road. And he is convinced that someone has done this on purpose. – You can clearly see that it has been cut down with an axe. It is strange and dangerous that such a thing should happen.
