Sinner himself writes on X: “After a good week of training, I started to feel unwell. I spent a couple of days training and during a doctor’s visit we found out that I had tonsillitis and was strongly discouraged from playing.” The 22-year-old further writes that it is a “big disappointment to lose the Games, which was one of my main goals this season”. He ends by wishing his compatriots good luck in the Olympics and writes “Forza Italia”. The Italian was considered one of the top favorites in the singles tournament alongside, among others, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud. Worlds Sinner has taken the tennis world by storm in the last two years. At the start of 2023, the Italian was number 15 in the world ranking, before a strong finish to the year brought him all the way up to 4th place. The 22-year-old took the momentum into 2024, and at the end of January he beat Medvedev in the final of the Australian Open. Since then there have been titles in Rotterdam (ATP 500), Miami (Masters) and Halle (ATP 500). Only Alcaraz (twice), Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev have managed to beat the Italian in 2024.
