23 July 2024 at 10:07 FHI: Salmonella infection in Norway after contact with small birds and cats Salmonella bacteria have been detected in 10 people who can be linked to the same outbreak. Four of the cases come from Trøndelag, and two from Vestland. One case has been found in Agder, Møre and Romsdal, Nordland and Troms respectively. In recent months, FHI has investigated an increase in the number of people infected with Salmonella Typhimurium. Now they have found that bacteria with the same genetic profile in samples from one cat. The same genetic profile has also been found in small birds. Eight out of the ten people state that they have had contact with cats or small birds in the time before they became ill. Acting section manager Umaer Naseer in FHI says in a press release that it is important to wash your hands after all contact with small birds and cats. Salmonella is excreted in the animals’ faeces.
