Salmonella infection from small birds and cats – news Trøndelag – Local news, TV and radio

A total of ten people have been diagnosed with salmonella bacteria from the same outbreak. This is stated by FHI in a press release on Tuesday morning. The persons fell ill between March and June this year. Four of those infected live in Trøndelag and two in Vestland. In addition, there is one case each in Agder, Møre and Romsdal, Nordland and Troms. Suspect infection from small birds and cats Some of those infected belong to an outbreak where contact with small birds or cats is the suspected source of infection, according to FHI. The most common mode of infection for Salmonella is through contaminated food and drink, but infection can also occur through direct contact with animals. Eight of the infected state having been in contact with cats or small birds in the time before they became ill. – Salmonella is excreted in the animals’ faeces and to prevent infection to humans it is important to wash your hands after all contact with small birds and cats, says Umaer Naseer in FHI. Goes away on its own According to the FHI, the most common symptoms of a salmonella infection are diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain.
