Experts are already pointing out that Donald Trump can profit from the assassination against him on the night of Sunday Norwegian time. The image of the former US president with a clenched fist and bloody face in front of the American flag is described as iconic. But can incumbent President Joe Biden also take advantage of the chaotic period American politics is in? Associate professor at the Faculty of Law at UiO and US expert Sofie Høgestøl believes the assassination will, at least for a few days, take the focus away from the storm in the Democratic Party. Democratic “civil war” Because it was only a few weeks ago that Biden made what many believe was a very bad figure during a debate against Trump. This has led to what US expert Høgestøl calls a large, internal “civil war” in the Democratic Party. Parts of the party want to replace Biden, while he himself expresses that he does not want to step aside. – After the assassination, parts of the party may soon think that, now we have to gather, now American politics is so turbulent that we cannot replace our presidential candidate, who is also the sitting president of the United States, says Høgestøl to news. US expert Sofie Høgestøl says the Biden camp must now reconsider how hard they should attack Trump with personal characteristics in a negative direction. Photo: Johanna Hauge / n633785 She points out that the Democrats have a bad time if they want to replace Biden. – The national meeting of the Democrats is in August, and by then they must have made a choice. It will be very difficult, if not completely impossible, to change candidates after you have had a national meeting, says Høgestøl, and continues: – That is why these weeks are so important. The fact that Biden may now buy himself another week increases the chances that he will remain in office as a candidate. – Favorable for Biden Author and US expert Jan Arild Snoen also believes the assassination will take the focus away from the chaos surrounding Biden. – That Biden needed a change of focus is something several people said before the assassination happened. What was supposed to take away the focus was the Republicans’ national convention, but then this came, which to an even greater extent gives that shift, says Snoen to news. – So it is beneficial for Biden, he continues. Jan Arild Snoen believes that it will take serious missteps from Biden for his position as presidential candidate to be challenged. Photo: Amanda Iversen Orlich / n647093 Snoen also believes that Biden benefits well from having the opportunity to play the role of president. – To be able to speak, to be unifying. It is a role he masters better than settings such as debates and press conferences. Biden’s chance of keeping the throne has increased significantly because of the assassination, says Snoen. The image of Trump after he was shot is already being described as iconic. Photo: AP He believes that there must now be new, gross missteps from Biden for his position as presidential candidate to be threatened. – In any case, in the coming week, I will be very surprised if there is any massive push against Biden. Both because the focus is on Trump and the Republicans, but also because Biden has to be president for a few days. I think it will take some new negative appearances from Biden to trigger it. Thinks Biden is toning down the rhetoric Høgestøl thinks the Democrats now have some difficult trade-offs ahead of them. Biden’s plan, she says, has been to drive hard on a rhetoric that Trump is dangerous for democracy and unfit as president. – It will probably be a slightly more difficult message to promote in the aftermath of this assassination. So it will be exciting to see how they reformulate, says Høgestøl. – Why is that message difficult to promote? – Because Trump was almost killed on Saturday. Going hard on him and accusing him of being dangerous becomes a bit difficult now that he is the victim of an attempted murder. – Does Biden have to wait with the sharp rhetoric until Trump possibly brings it on the field? – Maybe. Biden was very clear in his speech that he’s going to continue to do politics, he’s going to continue to campaign and talk about why their message is better than the Republicans’. But I think it will be difficult for him to go very hard and personally on Trump. Whether it is tasty in the aftermath of an assassination is unclear. Shot in the ear It was during an election campaign meeting in Pennsylvania on the night of Sunday Norwegian time that Donald Trump was the victim of an assassination attempt. – I was hit by a bullet that grazed my right ear, says Trump on his own social media platform. The alleged perpetrator, a registered Republican, was shot and killed. One audience member was killed and two were critically injured. The FBI is leading the investigation, where the main task will be to find out the motive, and whether more people were involved, they say. Published 15.07.2024, at 09.37
