Several families trapped after landslide in Ombo – news Rogaland – Local news, TV and radio

– We panicked, and didn’t get much sleep last night, says the German tourist Sven Schröder. On Monday evening there was a large rock slide that hit a cabin and a property on the island of Ombo in Stavanger. Schröder saw the whole terrifying incident from the boat he was on a fishing trip with. Large boulders fell, and they have crushed a car on the property. – There are quite a few mountains that have collapsed. Those who lived in this cabin have had a guardian angel, there is no doubt about that, says duty manager Håkon Eide in the Ombo fire brigade. Five families could neither leave nor enter the area due to the barricades that had been set up, but a little after 11 o’clock the road was opened for necessary traffic. There is no danger of landslides where the families live. – It is important to say that I strongly advise people not to get into the race area. No one should travel here, says Eide. The road was closed in connection with the rock slide on the cottage field at Ombo. Photo: Adrian Fosse Årthun / news – We know too little whether new landslides may occur. That is also the reason why we block off the area. There will be further investigations that need to be carried out before it is certain whether there is a risk of further landslides. That’s according to Razmus Viggen, fire and rescue manager at Rogaland fire and rescue. The police wrote on Tuesday at 13.14 that the road is open, but there are four cabins that are currently being evacuated. The cabin owners have been informed. A new assessment will be made on Friday. Investigated area Two geologists commissioned by Norway’s Water and Energy Directorate (NVE) have further mapped landslide hazards in the area. Engineering geologist from Multiconsult, Håvard Barkved, says that there has been a lot of rain recently, which may have led to the landslide. – We have seen how much has come loose and how much is left loose after the landslide. We have not been able to assess the area in detail, but there is more that can be loosened over time, says engineering geologist from Multiconsult, Håvard Barkved. Mayor of Stavanger municipality, Sissel Knutsen Hegdal (H), tells news that they have not had a plan for race safety in the area until now. Mayor of Stavanger Municipality, Sissel Knutsen Hegdal. She says it makes a strong impression to see the pictures of the stone blocks that have fallen down. – I am extremely grateful that there were no injuries as a result of the collapse. Photo: Adrian Fosse Årthun / news Tourists witnessed the landslide Due to the risk of further landslides, 21 people have been evacuated from the cabin field, which consists of 17 cabins. – Most evacuees who have cabins here have gone home to their own homes. But there are some Germans who had rented a cabin directly below where the landslide happened. They were fishing when the collapse happened, and saw it happen, says Eide. The Germans were evacuated to another cabin on the island. Parts of the cabin have been turned into stickwood after the landslide. Photo: Adrian Fosse Årthun / news Two large landslides in 2013 This is not the first time landslides have occurred in this area. In 2013, there were two large landslides, also that time without personal injury. – Then it was also dramatic, and a safety net was set up, but this cabin is just outside the safety area, says project manager Eide. The cottage association has called for race protection since that time, Strandbuen has previously written. Published 09/07/2024, at 11.46 Updated 09.07.2024, at 14.27
