29 June 2024 at 09:10 Clashes in Germany before the national meeting of the AfD Clashes have broken out between the police and demonstrators in the German city of Essen, where the far-right Alternative for Germany party is holding a national meeting this weekend, writes NTB. A large group of demonstrators tried early on Saturday morning to break through barricades that the police have set up at the exhibition hall where the national meeting is to be held. The police used pepper spray and batons to hold them back, says a spokeswoman for the police. The German newspaper Bild wrote that close to 100,000 protesters are expected in the city in connection with the meeting, some of whom will probably try to block the entrance to prevent the AfD’s delegates from entering the Grugahalle. Around 600 AfD politicians are expected at the national meeting, where the party’s two current leaders, Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, are seeking re-election.
