Sena, Bolivia, through its new legislation “the Gran Maupare Integrated Management Natural Area”, has decided to protect 4.5 million square meters of the Amazon rainforest. In the past, Bolivia was at the top of deforestation in the world, but over the past 25 years, cities in Bolivia have protected parts of the Bolivian Amazon equivalent to the size of Iceland. The part Sena now protects is home to several endangered animals, as well as 9.2 million tonnes of carbon. The work Sena and the other cities in Bolivia are doing ensures the livelihood of the local community, while preserving the wildlife and natural diversity in the area. In addition, it means that their work to achieve the international goal of conserving 30% of each nation’s land areas is now several years ahead of schedule.
