– I am completely shocked by the accusations, which are completely unfounded, and I strongly refute them all, writes president Olle Dahlin in an e-mail from the International Biathlon Union. Swedish Dahlin has been president of the International Biathlon Union since 2018. He is now suspected of having entered into the same type of agreement with the sponsor company Infornt that the IBU had during Anders Besseberg’s reign. The agreement from Besseberg’s time must have had an advantageous price for Infront, according to information that was read out by the prosecutor during the trial against Anders Besseberg. According to news’s sources, the agreement from Besseberg’s time is said to be that Infront should have received agreements with IBU that were far below market value. Infront is a major player that buys and sells sports rights for TV. For the IBU, they have bought advertising space for biathlon events, such as the WC and World Cup – and the investigation concerns this agreement on sponsorship sales. Suggests political game – I will not hesitate to take any legal action necessary to maintain my good name and reputation, writes Dahlin. Dahlin dismisses the suspicion against him as a plot to cast doubt on Dahlin’s credibility as president. – I have not received any formal notice of investigation at this stage, but am aware of the politically motivated speculation and insinuations, writes Dahlin. Both current and former bosses linked to Infront have both been questioned and testified in the Besseberg case. So does Olle Dahlin. Among other things, it emerged in court that the former Infront-affiliated sponsor leader Volker Schmid referred to Dahlin as a terrible person. The documentation from text messages between Schmid and Besseberg was shown in court. Schmid then pointed out that Dahlin should run for president of the IBU in 2018. “It is therefore clear that only you can be the right opponent,” he wrote to Besseberg. In another SMS, he pointed out that Olle Dahlin and Jiri Hamza, envisioned roles as president and finance officer after the congress in 2018. “These people are terrible and advantages are already working as if everything was already decided,” Schmid wrote to Besseberg. Schmid is now a suspect in the investigation of Infront. There is also Infront’s general manager Stefan Krauss. He further writes that the independent integrity unit in the IBU, called the BIU (Biathlon Integrity Unit), has not raised any suspicions against the IBU’s existing agreement with Infront. – I have no doubt that the Austrian investigation will find that this is the case and will prove that I have acted correctly and ethically as president of the IBU. The International Biathlon Union writes this in a general statement to news on Thursday evening: “IBU is unable to comment on the investigation while it is ongoing. The IBU notes that the President vehemently denies wrongdoing of any kind. The Biathlon Integrity Unit (BIU), which represents the IBU as a potentially injured party in this case, is closely monitoring the situation, but to date has not seen any material evidence that could sustain unethical behavior by the IBU President”. “The IBU will continue to cooperate fully with the Austrian authorities in their investigation.” – Don’t be surprised The president of the Norwegian Biathlon Union, Arne Horten, tells news that he does not want to speculate on the suspicion: – We will have to wait for the investigation and see what evidence is found. Horten explains that the agreement at the time went through both the board and the internal investigation body. PRESIDENT: Arne Horten. Likewise, BIU has vouched for it, says Horten. – Were you surprised by the investigation? – So far I was not surprised. There are many who are drawn in eventually. Then we get an overview, so that there will be no doubts left when everything has been investigated.
