Five players have qualified to participate in the auction for offshore wind in the Southern North Sea II. The auction opens on Monday 18 March, reports the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. The companies that will continue in the auction are: Aker Offshore Wind, BP and Statkraft Equinor and RWE Norseman Wind (Energie Baden-Württemberg AG) Shell, Lyse and Eviny Ventyr (Parkwind and Ingka) Originally there were seven companies that wanted to develop sea breeze. American Hydroelectric Corporation and Chinese Mingyang Smart Energy also wanted to take part in the auction, but failed to qualify. The minister: Looking forward to a good auction The five other companies that go ahead in the competition, on the other hand, have documented that they meet the minimum criteria for viability and positive ripple effects. They have also fulfilled the requirement regarding the ability to implement. – I look forward to a good auction between these companies, says Energy Minister Terje Aasland in a press release. By 2040, the government will allocate an area for 30,000 MW of offshore wind production. In 2020, the first areas on the Norwegian continental shelf were opened for renewable energy production at sea. The first competitions for project areas for offshore wind on the Norwegian continental shelf were announced on 29 March 2023. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre called the day a milestone for the green shift in Norway. Closed auction When the auction starts on 18 March, it will be conducted in English and with open bidding. In the auction, the five players will compete for state aid. The player with the lowest bid øre/kWh wins the auction, says the press release. The auction itself will be closed to the public.
