The Meteorological Institute extended a yellow danger warning for ice in southern Norway on Thursday morning and warns of challenging driving conditions in large parts of the country. The danger warning now extended from Sauda in the West, through the whole of Agder and Telemark, to Austlandet north of Oslo. – With the low pressure coming in from the south today, there can be both rain, snow and freezing rain, writes the Meteorological Institute on X. – But the result will be the same for many: Challenging driving conditions. First starts all the way south The danger warning has slightly different starting points based on where in southern Norway one is, says state meteorologist Julie Solvik Vågane. – In Agder it has already started, while in the west it is expected to be icy for vegans around lunchtime. In the east, the temperature change will not come until tonight, she says. The notice applies until lunchtime on Friday. Nevertheless, there can be challenging driving conditions even after that. – First of all, I am notifying you about this moment of surprise. It may still be smooth throughout Friday afternoon and evening. Saturday looks like it will be fine, says Vågane. Smooth start to the winter holidays Friday is the start of the winter holidays for many in southern Norway. The state meterologist says it does not look completely dark for those who want to get to the mountains safely. – I would recommend checking out local weather and road conditions and evaluating from that. But if you are going out on the road today or tomorrow morning, you should allow extra time, says Vågane. She explains that freezing rain is the scariest. – It’s when rain falls on cold ground and freezes immediately. It is difficult to see the road, and with rain in the air, the driver may think that it is not smooth. But it can be very smooth, she says.
