Young holiday workers were scolded – hotel owners ask adults to toughen up – news Møre og Romsdal – Local news, TV and radio

The dinner visit to the hotel in Åndalsnes earlier this summer has seen both the holiday substitute and the manager get a kick out of it. A guest who was given the wrong food is said to have reacted with anger, and this affected the young temporary worker. – To put it bluntly, it is damnable that young people should come to work and find themselves being treated like this, says hotel manager and owner Rune Vestheim Skeide. The young and inexperienced should have been told both how useless the person concerned was, and how bad the restaurant/cafe was. Afterwards, he published a post on social media, and received a lot of support. The hotel owner had enough and published this post on LinkedIn, among others. Avisa Nordland recently wrote about the guest who allegedly refused to pay the holiday temporary worker with foreign origins. – We are both angry, upset and sad, at the same time that such an episode will not occur in Norway in 2022, says Aasjord to news. Photo: Simon Piera Paulsen / news Fears that temporary workers will quit There is a great shortage of labor in tourism this summer, especially in Western Norway and in Nordland. This has led to many young, inexperienced temps getting jobs that older, more experienced temps would normally have had. It is not the first time this summer that news has told about young temporary workers who have been treated badly. Henrik Hamborg, political adviser for skills and recruitment at NHO, thinks the situation is very sad. – In the worst case, it can lead to the person concerned not wanting to work in our industry, and if that happens, it is very sad because there are many people who have their first work experience in tourism, he says. Henrik Hamborg in NHO encourages people to have an extra dose of patience and a smile on their face when they meet young people who are new to their job. Photo: NHO Reiseliv – But do you understand that adults who pay dearly for a good dinner can get upset when they meet someone who is inexperienced and insecure in their job? – Yes, I can understand that you react, but then it is important that you take it in stride and take it in the right way, he says. He believes that any criticism should be addressed to the boss or day-to-day manager and not a random summer worker. – Think about your own children Both holiday workers took the episodes seriously, but after thinking about it a bit, neither of them has stopped. The hotel manager at Åndalsnes, Rune Vestheim Skeide, has called his post on Facebook and LinkedIn “Hey you idiot – find one in your own size”. Skeide believes adults must remember that they themselves have been young, and must think about how they behave towards new summer temporary workers. – The question one can ask is how one would react if one’s own child had been treated in this way, he says.
