18 January 2024 at 19:14 Mexico and Chile ask the International Criminal Court to investigate possible crimes in Palestine Mexico and Chile ask the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate possible crimes committed in Palestine, reports Reuters. The reason is that the countries are concerned about the escalation of the conflict, particularly against civilian targets, writes the agency. There has been war in the Gaza Strip since October 7. Hamas then attacked Israel, took hostages and killed around 1,100 people. At least 24,620 Palestinians have so far been killed in the attacks against Gaza since the beginning of the war. The ICC’s then chief prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, said in 2019 that there were reasonable grounds to investigate Israel for war crimes committed in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. After a longer period of assessment, the court decided in February 2021 to initiate such an investigation, which several countries and organizations such as Amnesty International have requested. A new call came in November from South Africa, Bangladesh, Bolivia, the Comoros and Djibouti. Mexico and Chile are now apparently joining the demand. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is currently ruling on South Africa’s claim that the population there is subject to genocide. (news/NTB)
