There are cold days in our long country, and today the lowest temperature was measured in Kautokeino. – It’s going perfectly fine. We know where we live, and have grown up with it here. That’s what Marianne Isaksdatter Mikkelsen Triumf from Kautokeino says. Early today she woke up to a thermometer showing minus 42.6 degrees. It hasn’t been this cold since 1999. Marianne Isaksdatter Mikkelsen Triumf is used to the fact that it can get very cold outside. It heralded the high pressure that was on its way, bringing with it cold air from Siberia. But the latest forecasts show that the mercury in the thermometer will not drop as low as feared. In Kautokeino, the scale shows minus 42.6 degrees. Photo: Marianne Isaksdatter Triumph Important to dress well Øystein Wiggen is a senior researcher at Sintef in Trondheim. He says it is important to dress well if you are going out in the cold. – It is important to protect the whole person. You must have good shoes, warm trousers, a thick and good jumper, jacket and hat – and not least good gloves, he says. If you wear too little clothing, it can have serious consequences in the worst case. – In the worst case, the consequence can be that you get frostbite, and that is something you want to carry with you throughout your life. But for the vast majority, it means that they get an uncomfortable trip, which can become quite painful if it’s cold enough. Photo: Bent Lindsetmo / news Children must wear many layers of clothing In the Solemskogen nature nursery in Oslo, the children play outside regardless of the weather. Then they use their free time to keep active and dress well. – The young love to be outside, and it is important to be outside anyway. We always consider the temperatures against the wind, and that the children are doing well when they are active. Then we would rather shorten the outdoor hours a bit. That’s what the director of the nursery, Rigmor Bjerke Marcussen, says. Josefine Hoftvedt (5) and Eira Grepstad Layfield (4) play outside in the snow in the Solemskogen nature nursery. Photo: Mariam Eltervåg Cissé / news For children, it is extra important that they have several layers of clothing and are not outside for too long. – Juveniles are cooled faster than adults. They are smaller and have a larger surface area in relation to their body mass. This means that they emit heat more efficiently, says Wiggen. If you are going to take the kids outside, you should keep them active, and have a low threshold for going back in and taking breaks from the cold. Rigmor Bjerke Marcussen is the director of the Solemskogen nature nursery in Oslo. She says it is important that the children have a high level of activity when they are out in the cold. Photo: Mariam Eltervåg Cissé / news – If children are to be calm when it is as cold as it is now, they have to wear so many clothes that they are almost unable to move, he says. – There are many good children’s clothes, but when it gets so cold they have to wear so much that they almost become like a little ball. – Early to cancel the extreme cold If you look at värtenesta yr.no, it tells you about up to ten degrees milder temperatures in several places. – There is still a possibility of very low temperatures. For Oslo’s part, it will most likely be between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius, but it can still get down to minus 26 degrees, says Berger, adding that inner parts of the Austlandet can still get well below minus 30 degrees. – It is a bit early to call off the extreme cold, because several places have the possibility of really low temperatures. It depends on the cloud layer, adds the meteorologist. For those who like the cold badly, it will be somewhat comforting that the weather will be milder over the next week. The cold will first let go of the roof in the north. 2024 gets off to a bitterly cold start, but the second week should be of the milder kind. The price of electricity has fallen in the weather Although the cold will not be as bad as feared, the price of electricity has fallen in the weather. This is how the electricity prices will be on Friday without taxes and surcharges: In the price areas of Trøndelag, Vestland, Møre coast and Austlandet, the average price will be 2.13 øre throughout Friday. At worst, the electricity will cost NOK 5.93 between 5pm and 6pm. In the southern Norway price area, the average price will be NOK 1.02, while in Troms and Finnmark the price is 56 øre on average. This is shown by figures from the power exchange Nordpool. By comparison, electricity costs around NOK 1 on average on Thursday, with the exception of Troms and Finnmark. The electricity there costs 52.8 øre. Private households receive electricity support, and 90 per cent of everything over 73 øre is covered. – Don’t save on electricity In Luster municipality in Vestland, pipelayer Edin Hunshamar asks people not to save on electricity when it gets cold. He has already had his first assignment with frozen reeds from a farmer. – They only have to keep the heat in houses and cabins, so that the temperature stays at a minimum of ten degrees. It is usually more expensive to save on electricity with the damage that can follow.
