The storm, which has been named “Gerrit” in Great Britain, has hit Western Norway this evening. The Meteorological Institute expects very strong gusts of between 33 and 42 meters per second from the east-southeast, and has issued an orange danger warning for parts of Rogaland and Vestland. A strong storm is expected in the mountains. The strongest wind along the coast is expected between Egersund and Bryne. At midnight, a small storm is expected in Bryne. – The wind is increasing now. A storm is already blowing in the mountains. It is a front that is moving north, says state meteorologist Haldis Berge in the Meteorological Institute to news at 10 p.m. Haldis Berge, state meteorologist Photo: Marit Hommedal Further south, towards Agder, there will be less wind, but more snow. Over 150 kilometers per hour – It is not something that happens often, that we get such strong wind and snow. The most snow is expected in Agder and south-eastern parts of Rogaland, and there we also have a yellow warning for snow. The consequence is a snowpack that creates additional challenges, says the state meteorologist. The strongest wind is therefore expected around midnight and for the next few hours. Wind gusts of 42 meters per second correspond to over 150 kilometers per hour. Photo: Meteorological Institute For the southern areas, the wind will decrease at 6 o’clock on Thursday morning. The wind also becomes strong further north. For parts of Møre and Romsdal and Vestland there is a yellow warning and wind gusts of 30-37 meters per second. The danger is not over here until 1pm on Thursday. Problems over the mountains On Wednesday evening, wind and snow have already caused problems on the roads in the mountains. The E134 over Haukelifjell was closed at 9.30pm on Wednesday when the storm Gerrit struck in full force. There had then been convoy driving for a few hours. National highway 7 over Hardangervidda is closed to vehicles under 7.5 tonnes, Column driving for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes. – There may be a danger that the road may blow again, it forms very quickly. We advise people to wait to drive until this storm subsides, says traffic operator Christian Strømmen to NTB. If you have to go out and drive between east and west, Strømmen recommends the northernmost mountain pass, E16 over Filefjell. – It is very rare that it is closed there, only a few times a year, he says. At highway 13 Vikafjellet there is a convoy late on Wednesday evening. It is expected that the mountain pass will be closed by 24:00, reports the Road Traffic Centre. – The consequences of such weather are that objects can be blown away by the wind. There is a risk of damage to buildings. There will be canceled departures for ferries. Power supplies may be affected, roads may be closed due to fallen trees, and snowdrifts may also cause traffic jams and road closures. Locally there can be high waves, says the state meteorologist.
