– If he doesn’t realize that he has some major weaknesses, then he won’t win gold in the 1,500 meters next year. That’s what Josh Kerr says about Jakob Ingebrigtsen in an episode of the podcast The Sunday Plodcast. The Briton sprinted down Ingebrigtsen on the run in the WC final in Budapest this summer, among other things as a result of better sprinting technique, according to Kerr. In the podcast, Kerr tells about someone pissing off Ingebrigtsen after the final. A final where Ingebrigtsen, in the absence of hares, did most of the pulling work and took the lead already after 500 metres. Earlier in the season, after the European record in the 1500 meters in Chorzów, Ingebrigtsen had referred to herself as the third fastest, something Kerr had noticed. – I thought: “Oh, you have no idea. You have won so many races and run fantastically all season. You must be surrounded by so many yes-persons that you don’t realize that you have weaknesses”. I think it was part of his downfall, says the Briton. news has been in contact with the adviser to the Ingebrigtsen brothers, Espen Skoland. He states that Jakob Ingebrigtsen does not wish to comment on Kerr’s behavior. Missing the WC gold at 1500 meters Ingebrigtsen has Olympic gold at 1500 metres, four EC golds (two indoors and two outdoors) at the same distance, but in the context of the WC he has a total of three silvers – two outdoors and one indoors – on 1500 meters. Even though Ingebrigtsen has proven to be the runner with the best times over the distance in the last two seasons. Now World Championship winner Kerr believes that people will start to realize that Ingebrigtsen is easier to beat in races without pacesetters. – But I don’t think he will do it, because his ego is quite big. (Timothy) Cheruiyot was his pacesetter in the 2021 Olympics, so if you look at it, he doesn’t win many races without pacesetters, says Kerr. The Olympic champion, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, and his girlfriend Elisabeth Asserson have bought their dream apartment. But there is one thing missing before the outdoor area is complete. – Looking for attention In an earlier interview with The Telegraph, Kerr said that he had piles of notes lying around in his hotel room in Budapest, where he analyzed his opponents and how they jumped. There he also said that Ingebrigtsen’s celebration in the last turn of the semi-final made him suspect that the Norwegian was relieved about something, and therefore tried to raise his own self-confidence. Ingebrigtsen won the semi-final before the aforementioned Kerr, after it seemed for a long time that Ingebrigtsen was locked in and in danger of breaking out. But with 250 meters to go it opened up for the Norwegian, who finished very strongly. In the podcast, Kerr elaborates: – I ran a fantastic semi-final, while he ran a terrible semi-final. I just think he’s very attention-seeking. He had to do something to get attention back on him. He claims that he was ill before the semi-final, but at the time I knew he was just looking for attention, says Kerr. He also reacts to the fact that the Norwegian did the same in the attempt at 5000 meters in the WC in 2022 – just after he had been beaten by Jake Wightman in the 1500 meters – and believes that it shows that Ingebrigtsen does it to be talked about. New championship opportunities in 2024 After the final of the 1,500 metres, Ingebrigtsen said that his throat had been dry on the same day as the semi-final, and that it all “escalated” towards the final. Later in the championship, he took a fine gold in the 5000 meters later in the championship. Even then Ingebrigtsen felt unwell. Afterwards, several media reports were linked to Ingebrigtsen referring to Kerr as “the next guy” after the 1500 meter final. Disrespectful, Kerr said. A bit poor, big brother Henrik Ingebrigtsen replied back. In the podcast, Kerr repeated that he feels that Jakob Ingebrigtsen does not show him the same respect as he does outside, and that he thinks Ingebrigtsen has not got the hang of “losing gracefully” in the same way as others. Next year there may be several new duels between Ingebrigtsen and Kerr, with both the EC in Rome at the beginning of June and the Olympics in Paris in August.
