1 December 2023 at 10:09 Norwegian glaciers are getting thinner and the glacier fronts continue to melt 33 out of 36 measured glacier fronts have melted back in 2023, according to the measurements by the Norwegian Directorate of Water Resources and Energy (NVE). The 36 glaciers have on average melted back 27 meters this year, according to NVE. The glaciers with the greatest decline are Bondhusbreen on the west side of Folgefonna, Bøverbreen in Jotunheimen and Engabreen in Nordland. In recent years, Norwegian glaciers have receded at a great pace. An overview from NVE last year showed that 364 square kilometers of glaciers disappeared in Norway between 2006 and 2021. This corresponds to an area the size of Mjøsa. – The glaciers are melting because of climate change. They are very sensitive to climate change and adjust their size by increasing or decreasing when the climate changes, says glacier researcher Liss Marie Andreassen in NVE to news.
