You probably know the saying; when life gives you a Marna engine from the seabed, make apple juice. At least that was what Nikolai Dyrstad thought when he fished out the old engine from a shipwreck on the Sørland coast. The engine from the 50s has now been given new life in an apple juice press. The invention is the only one of its kind. – Some may think it’s a bit strange and some think it’s tough, says Dyrstad. The Marna engine is an icon for the southern village of Mandal. The factory was established in 1918 and production began in 1923. More than 30,000 engines from 3 to 48 horsepower were produced before Marna went bankrupt in 1984, writes the Norwegian Technical Museum. The engine drives the press The Marna engine drives a grinder that cuts the apple into small pieces. The apple pieces are then moved into a press that presses the apple pieces with hydraulic power. Dyrstad has also replaced the hydraulic oil with sunflower oil in case there should be a leak from the engine. – You just have to start grinding the apple, then the juice comes out the other end, he says and shows how he uses the unique invention. The machine is efficient. In just one day, she can make 150 liters of juice. Dyrstad is not sure how he came up with the idea. – It was probably that we had a lot of apples left over very often, I also had this old Marna engine, says Dyrstad. Dyrstad has fitted additional equipment to the appliance, so that he can eat his liver dish while pressing apples. In a small tube, he can actually cook sausages. – When the day is over, all you have to do is throw in some wiener sausages, and the Marna machine will provide hot water, says Dyrstad. – Many will say that this is somewhat original. Would you call yourself an original? – I don’t think so. I don’t know what people will call me, a junkyard elf perhaps? Whatever you want to call him, he really enjoyed making apple juice. – We have a lot of fun with this. This is not for work, this is just for fun, says Dyrstad.
