10 October 2023 at 18:02 E. coli outbreak not under control – The Norwegian Food Safety Authority very concerned about seriously ill children The Norwegian Food Safety Authority is concerned because several children have become seriously ill from E. coli infection after eating minced meat products. The outbreak is not under control. Hamburgers and other meat products have contained bacteria that are identical to those that have made people sick, according to the outbreak investigation carried out by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, the Veterinary Institute and municipal chief medical officers. – The most important thing you can do to avoid getting sick is to cook hamburgers and other minced meat products thoroughly, and to have good kitchen hygiene, says senior advisor Catherine Signe Svindland in the Norwegian Food Safety Authority’s section for biological food safety to NTB. Infection has so far been detected in 20 people. More than half of those infected are children under the age of 13, and 7 of these have developed serious illness. – This is a serious situation, and many young children have become very ill. This is the largest EHEC outbreak we have had in Norway, says section leader Susanne Hyllestad in FHI. (NTB)
