Far fewer heart attacks and strokes in Norway – news Norway – Overview of news from different parts of the country

From 2017 to 2022, new cases of acute heart attack have fallen by 31 per cent in women and 22 per cent in men. Acute stroke has fallen by 8 per cent in women and 10 per cent in men. This is what the Institute of Public Health writes in a press release. – A decrease in the number of people who smoke, have high cholesterol and/or high blood pressure, as well as better treatment are likely reasons for the decrease in heart attacks and strokes, says Ester Kringeland, senior physician at the Heart and Vascular Register. Despite the decline, cardiovascular diseases are still the second most common cause of death in Norway, and accounted for 23 percent of all deaths in 2022. Stable figures for heart failure – Unfortunately, we do not see the same positive development for heart failure or for the heart rhythm disorders atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter, but the figures adjusted for increased age in the population are fairly stable, states Kringeland.
