Really stormy autumn weather is expected in large parts of southern Norway on Monday. The meteorologists have issued a yellow warning for both lightning, rain, floods and landslides. This morning there is an area of rain showers and thunder a little south in the North Sea. Around 12 o’clock on Monday afternoon, the storm is expected to hit Agder. – Some of these showers can be quite powerful, so we can get 20 mm, maybe 30 mm of rain within an hour. There is also thunder in the showers, so we will probably also get lightning, says state meteorologist John Smits. More danger warnings This morning, the Meteorological Institute upgraded the danger warnings to also apply to lightning in several places in Agder, Rogaland and Eastern Norway. In addition, there are yellow danger warnings for rain, flooding and wind. – The danger warning extends eastwards roughly to the Oslofjord, and also northwards so it covers most of Telemark and a small part of Buskerud, says Smits. Many places in Agder have already received some rainfall. Where it rained most during the night to Monday, between 40 and 50 mm of rain fell. Some places can receive up to 70 millimeters in 24 hours. – Some places, including Kristiansand, actually received up to 20 mm within an hour, says Smits. So much rain in a short time can cause a lot of storm water and driving conditions can become difficult. Danger of floods and landslides In addition to all the warnings from the Meteorological Institute, NVE has issued warnings at yellow level about floods and also landslides in approximately the same areas. – The landslide warning covers a number of areas further north in Buskerud, too, because there the soil is still quite wet and saturated after all the rain we received earlier.
