The real death toll could be much higher, warns Save the Children. – We had never imagined such high death tolls for children as a result of hunger. Unfortunately, this is now the reality in Sudan, says Arif Noor, Save the Children’s country director in Sudan. Between May and June, at least 316 children, most under the age of five, died of malnutrition or related diseases in White Nile state. This year, over 2,400 children have been admitted to nutrition centers with severe acute malnutrition in the same state. In eastern Sudan’s Gedaref state, at least 132 children died of malnutrition between April and July, and in the capital, Khartoum, at least 50 children died of hunger or hunger-related illnesses at a state orphanage after fighting prevented staff from accessing the orphanage to of the children. At least 24 of the dead were infants, according to the aid organization. (NTB)
