– We try to be well prepared as always. It is important not to get lost in it, but try to have a smart approach, says Warholm coach Leif Olav Alnes to news – and continues: – When people say they have trained smart, I always ask if they have trained little. I don’t think it’s smart, but I think being prepared with equipment is appropriate, says Alnes to news. Before Warholm and the coach arrived in Budapest on Wednesday evening, a truck filled to the brim with aids to optimize the charging of the Norwegians was driven down. It is needed when the weather forecast predicts between 30 and 35 degrees on the three days the 400 meter hurdles is organized for the men. The equipment list included a vacuum cleaner to remove excess dust, as well as a bathtub and cooling vests for cooling down. A number of items were earmarked for Warholm and Alnes. Because in the trial heat, Warholm had full control and is ready for the semi-finals. The time was 48.76. – It’s really just about using as little effort as possible and getting on, so I felt it went quite well, says Warholm to news and emphasizes that he used little effort. – He saved a lot. It was obviously wise to save. I am very, very happy, says coach Alnes after the race. The Norwegian will run in the semi-finals on Monday. Warlom rival Alison dos Santos also advanced comfortably from her heat. – I feel stronger than I was last year, says the Brazilian to news. – Various tricks Sports manager Erlend Slokvik could reveal that the duo had asked for the biggest equipment: Table tennis tables for leisure, treadmills for athletics. And a little bit. STRAIGHT TO THE STADIUM: Two treadmills, some hurdles and poles were left after the truck was emptied of equipment that was supposed to be left at the athletes’ hotel in Budapest. Photo: Fredrik Tombra / news – The heat is brutal, but it is the same for everyone, says Warlhom after the trial heat. Because with well over 30 degrees in the shade on the hottest days in Budapest, the duo will wait the longest to expose the 27-year-old to the scorching sun. – Then you have to come up with a few different tricks. Leif is very good at it. Having a treadmill here and the possibility to cool down a room is well thought out. Finding such methods to warm up is smart, Warholm told news before the start of the WC. By keeping Warholm sheltered from the sun and heat, they hope to limit the impact it potentially has on their races. The biggest fear is overheating. – We have mostly managed to get by in the shade and sometimes in air conditioning and such. We try to heat up the inside and not the outside, explains Alnes. ON PLACE: The treadmill is placed dark and safe in the Norwegian layer tent in Budapest. Photo: Fredrik Tombra / news – 30 degrees and an hour and a half warm-up is not very good for performance, adds Warholm. The heat-sensitive duo took similar action in Monaco. The double world champion then carried out large parts of the warm-up in a hotel corridor and entered the stadium several minutes after the competitors. Norway’s leading hope for gold, together with Jakob Ingebrigtsen, says that the most important thing is to know that the surplus is in place before the WC kicks off. – And not least to get a good feeling in the round and to get a cheap trip to trials and semi-finals so we can clinch in the final. There are many steps to go through and the preliminary rounds are important to be able to deliver at the top in the final, says Warholm, who opens the WC with trial heats in the 400 meter hurdles on Sunday, at 11.25am. He then gets a day of rest before the semi-final on Tuesday at 21:00. The medals will be awarded from 21.50 on Wednesday 23 August. You can watch all the races on news 1.
