The election campaign is underway. Trude Basso is the fourth candidate on the Labor Party’s list in Trondheim and is likely to be elected to the city council in the autumn. – You get a little discouraged because there are always cases that interfere with local election campaign matters, says Basso. Recently, two ministers have left the government following cases of disqualification. Now finally Ola Borten Moe, who on Friday afternoon himself announced that he is resigning as minister of research and higher education. “My trust in political Norway is falling. That realization makes me sad.” This is what local politician Trude Basso (Ap) writes on Twitter. Declining confidence On Saturday, she stood in Trondheim to run an election campaign for Ap before the autumn municipal and county council elections. – People wonder what is happening. What is it that makes you constantly get new cases that deal with incapacity, like yesterday with Borten Moe. It is case by case that is rolled up in the national media, says Trude Basso. She fears that it will undermine trust in the political system. Ministers have resigned on 21 July 2023: Ola Borten Moe resigned from the government after it was revealed that he had broken the integrity rules after he bought shares in Kongsberg Gruppen at the same time as he participated in a government meeting about a multibillion-dollar contract for KG-owned Nammo. 23 June 2023: Anette Trettebergstuen chose to resign as Minister of Culture and Equality because she has several very serious errors related to integrity. Trettebergstuen has appointed and proposed people she is incompetent to important positions, also after a warning from the ministry. 2 March 2022: Labor and Inclusion Minister Hadia Tajik resigned following revelations about her commuter accommodation. A lease formed the basis for tax exemption, despite the fact that she neither paid rent nor ever lived in the dormitory. She later repaid around NOK 200,000. – There is doubt as to whether elected politicians act in the best interests of the community and for everyone, or whether one acts in the best interests of oneself. I find that incredibly sad. The central Trondheim politician says the cases damage the trust people have in politicians. – It is very serious for democracy in Norway when it comes to case, case, case, and has actually done so over several years, says Basso. – I know that my trust in political Norway is on the decline. Ruining local election campaign On Friday, the Labor politician from Trondheim wrote a heartfelt sigh on Facebook. She has received many statements of support, also from party colleagues elsewhere in the country. The cases that have been rolled up in the media affect the local election campaign, says Clara Øberg, municipal council representative (Ap) from Sogndal in Vestland. – When we stand in the store or on a stand, we are the ones who are confronted with this. The voters that we meet are our rural people. They will ask how they can trust us, when they see what they do centrally, says Øberg. Labor politician Clara Øberg from Sogndal shares the sigh of relief from her party colleagues that running an election campaign can be difficult. Photo: Sondre Dalaker / news Trude Basso from Trondheim Ap questions how cases of incapacity are handled by the government’s management. – When several cases come under the same management, then it must be allowed to question whether the cases are handled correctly, she says. Støre says they have acted resolutely Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) says that trust is absolutely crucial in politics. – When such cases arise, we must act resolutely. I have done that. Two ministers had to go, because they had acted in a way that exceeded trust, says Jonas Gahr Støre. On 23 June, Anette Trettebergstuen chose to resign as Minister of Culture and Equality, because she has appointed and proposed people she is friends with for important posts. On 21 July, Ola Borten Moe resigned as minister following the revelation that he had broken the ethics rules when he bought shares in the Kongsberg Group. At the same time, he took part in a government meeting about a billion dollar contract for KG-owned Nammo. – Many local politicians from Ap and Sp must answer for mistakes that your ministers have made, what is your message to them? – We take this very seriously. Trust is absolutely crucial in politics. I can assure you that this is something that the government is paying a lot of attention to. It happens that people make mistakes. Here, two ministers have made mistakes, and then there will be consequences, says the prime minister in the Ap–Sp government.
