Small amounts of listeria have been discovered in smoked salmon from Sotra seafood, which is the brand of Sotra Fiskeindustri in Glesvær in Vestland. The lots in question are now withdrawn from the market. – We are talking about very low occurrences of listeria, so low that we are unable to count them, but we are not taking any chances, says production manager at Sotra Seafood, Kjetil Søyland, to news. Sold as local food The recall applies to packages with batch no. 16039 and 16029 marked with 17 August as the last day of consumption. The salmon is sold via the wholesaler Troye in Western Norway as local food, and it is about 250 kilos of salmon. Photo: Sotra Sjømat Sotra Sjømat asks customers who have bought salmon from the batches in question to throw the product away or return it to the store. – The quantities of listeria bacteria we are talking about here are not dangerous for anyone. But we want to make sure that we don’t give our customers any chance of getting sick. Therefore, they can deliver the salmon back to the store and get the money back, then we will sort it out with the store afterwards, says daily manager at Sotra Fiskeindustri, Trond Helge Nyegaard. Listeria infection in three counties The announcement comes just two days after the Institute of Public Health announced that listeria infection had been discovered in four people in Viken, Oslo and Vestland. The four were all infected in June this year. All fell ill after eating smoked salmon from the same producer, Troll Salmon. The Listeria bacteria is dangerous for the elderly, people with weakened immune systems and pregnant women. The exposed groups can get serious illnesses such as meningitis or blood poisoning. Facts about Listeria Listeria bacteria, especially Listeria monocytogenes, can cause serious illness in humans. Individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable, and even small doses of infection can lead to illness and, in the worst case, death in the elderly, newborns and people with underlying diseases. For pregnant women, the bacterium can cause abortion. Normally healthy people can also become ill from the bacteria, but the symptoms are normally milder and they can tolerate somewhat larger amounts of the bacteria than more exposed people.
