Representatives from Sweden, Turkey and Finland are now meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels to discuss Sweden’s membership. At a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Jens Stoltenberg says that “the time has come for Sweden to become a NATO member”. – Any postponement of Sweden’s membership will be welcomed by the PKK and Putin in Russia, says Stoltenberg. Turkey accuses Sweden of being a free haven for the Kurdish liberation group PKK. Both Turkey and the EU consider this group to be “terrorists”. The Secretary-General goes on to say that leaders from Turkey and Sweden will meet again on Monday, and says all parties agreed to say that Sweden’s membership is “within reach”. The NATO summit next week will take place in Vilnius, Lithuania, which is right on the border with Russia and Belarus. The former Soviet republic has long been a highly critical voice against Russia. The main focus there will be the war in Ukraine and Sweden and Finland’s NATO membership, as in Madrid last year. Only two countries have so far not accepted Sweden’s application to become a NATO member, Hungary and Turkey. Finland had its application approved on 4 April this year.
