The newspaper quotes two anonymous sources who are said to be close to the Russian Defense Ministry. According to The New York Times, Surovikin is said to have known about the controversial Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin’s plans for a coup attempt. Anonymous sources in American intelligence assume that Prigozhin would never have been able to rebel in Russia without the support of central, high-ranking players in the Russian state apparatus.
