– She says that they were taken from the cabin to the common area. There were many from the corps who cried, and some screamed. I heard it was dramatic for her, says Aase to news. The daughter and the rest of the Solvang and Skåredalen school corps were on their way home from a corps trip when a fire started in a camper on the passenger ship MF Bergensfjord around midnight on the night of Wednesday. The ship from the shipping company Fjordlines was on its way from Hirtshals to Risavika outside Stavanger. The fire should have been extinguished quickly, but the situation was seen as dramatic. – She called me around 02.30. It was good to hear her voice. It’s disgusting. It’s her first time out. There are 12-year-old children and even younger than that, says Aase. She has made the roughly two-hour trip from Haugesund to pick up her daughter. – Now there has been no sleep last night. It intensifies all emotions, says Aase. A few minutes later, she is reunited with her daughter. Silje Aase with her husband Magnus Aarbakke. Here they have just been reunited with their daughter Frida, who was on board MF Bergensfjord when the fire started. The police received the passenger ship MF Bergensfjord on Wednesday morning. Photo: Ole Andreas Bø / news CEO of Fjordlines, Brian Thorsted Hansen, was also on hand to receive the ship. – Now I want to talk to our staff and our guests, he said. According to the CEO, there were around 500 guests on board. In total, there will be 591 people on board the ship, according to the Central Rescue Service. Thorsted Hansen believes the staff did everything right when the fire started. – There was a small fire and it was extinguished quickly. Staff did what they were supposed to, and the sprinkler system worked as it should. Brian Thorsted Hansen in place in Risavika. Photo: Mathias Oppedal / news – Soon in normal operation Thorsted Hansen goes on to say that the police will now be allowed to do their job as usual after such incidents. – The ship will continue to Bergen after a delay of one and a half hours. After that it will be in normal operation. The incident leader of the police at the scene, Torleif Paulsen, confirms to news that the fire apparently did not spread. – Whether it’s luck or good work, but it hasn’t caught fire anywhere else but in that car. We are still working on it and will get the fire-damaged car out and get an explanation from the owner, he says. Although the ship will soon be in normal operation, this particular trip was anything but normal for the school band from Haugesund. – There weren’t many people who wanted to sleep in their cabins, so we set up camp in a lounge, says chairman of the Solvang and Skåredalen school corps, Ingebjørg Tordal. – These are young people between 9 and 16, so it also depends a little on age. Eventually we learned that the boat was going into Kristiansand for assistance, so then we realized that they were calm about the situation. Tordal goes on to say that it was good to be in a team. – Now we are going on the bus back to Haugesund. I think the kids are very tired, so this will be another day where they have to recover. I was actually going to work, but that’s enough.
