On Wednesday morning, Hvaldimir was observed in Glomma in central Fredrikstad. The agony swam around the city ferries with several attendants. Here, Hvaldimir is playing close to one of the city ferries on Glomma. Photo: Christian Nicolai Bjørke/news Many turned up to watch the agony. Among them is Line Johansen, who accidentally caught sight of the quail. – It was very fun to see it. I just hope people leave it alone and don’t follow it by boat or swim after it. It is an animal that should be left alone, says Johansen. Team Hvaldimir in One Whale kept an eye on Hvaldimir in Fredrikstad on Wednesday afternoon. Photo: Rune Fredriksen / news Fredrikstad municipality is aware that the quail is in Glomma, but tells news that it is the Directorate of Fisheries that is responsible for monitoring him. The directorate has received several messages that cause great concern about the welfare of Hvaldimir. The messages go out swimming with the anguish and a lot of boat traffic around him. The directorate says so on its website. Now they ask people to stay away from the agony and leave him alone. Fears for the fate of the quail Recently, the white quail Hvaldimir has appeared in several videos in the area around Hvaler. Now the environment around him fears that the quail may suffer the same fate as the quail horse Freya, who was euthanized last year. – Everyone is worried that we will end up in the same situation as with Freya, says volunteer in One Whale, Inge Wegge. Team Hvaldimir in One Whale stays around the anguish when he comes to a place with people. The beluga is very popular, and many people make the trip to see the playful whale. Hvaldimir is a quail of the white quail type. Adult beluga whales are from 3.5 to 5.5 meters long and can weigh up to 1,500 kilograms. Photo: Geir Uppstad – It only takes one idiot for something crazy to happen, says Wegge. Hvaldimir was first seen in Måsøy municipality in April 2019. By then the quail had probably escaped from service with the Russian navy. He has since traveled along the Norwegian coast. – Not dangerous Rune Aae became known last year as a kvalross enthusiast. He is a biologist and emphasizes that Hvaldimir is not dangerous. – There is no aggression, and he has no teeth left. The difference between the two animals is that Hvaldimir will not go up on land, says Aae. Rune Aae says the torment is not dangerous, but that one must have respect for wild animals. Photo: Sindre Tønnes – That was what caused the problem with Freya. Because she wanted to go up on land and in boats. She ruined a lot, and Hvaldimir doesn’t. – He is kind to people, but wild animals must be respected. Damage from boats The biggest problem is propellers and fishing equipment that he can get stuck in. Wegge in One Whale says that Hvaldimir has had several wounds. He is also said to have been hit by boats, but it is not only boats that can threaten the agony. – There is very little food here. I saw he got some food yesterday, but he has lost quite a lot of weight. Now I am working with the authorities to help him to a place with more food. The ultimate goal is to get him north, and preferably as far north as Svalbard.
