The passion for climbing has always been great for Bøe, who this week is fighting for gold in joint climbing during the NM week. In recent years, the 23-year-old from Bergen has made a living from climbing – thanks a lot to a prize he won just under two years ago. Photo: Trond Kristian Kalstø – Then I used that opportunity to quit my job and have traveled around it since then, says Bøe to news. – Went “all in” Because when the climber won the car, he quit his regular job as a route planner at home in Norway and has spent much of his time in the last two years driving around Europe. – I’ve gone “all in” a bit. I quit my job and have been living on the money I have saved up. Bøe says he makes it work with freelancing in his old job and sponsorship money. For parts of the trip, he has also lived in a tent that is placed on top of the car. – Was the plan to always travel? – The plan was always to do it, but winning the car was a green flag to do it. Then I had everything in place to leave somehow. At the time I was looking for a car. It fits incredibly well. – That leasing agreement is insane in itself. It is a million dollar car, he says and adds that the most he has won in competition prizes in the past is NOK 10,000. Collecting crystals While he has been out and about, it is not just the climbing that has occupied his time. Bøe actually has an interest that is a little out of the ordinary. What? Crystal hunting. HUNTING: Bøe has a great interest in crystal and has collected several Photo: Private – Every time I’m on a new trip I run around the local area looking for crystal, he hires. – If it’s a day of rest, I can go all bananas and look for a crystal. If he is broken or there is an impurity in the crystal, then you will find some others. There are some who are more rare than others, he says further. The 23-year-old believes that one must do a lot of research in advance and know the geologist in the area in order to find crystals. “You have to have an eye for it”, he points out and goes on to say that his interest comes from when he was younger and liked to look for things. – I have taken it with me. It’s always cool to find a crystal. Now I have a good collection, so to speak. – So you collect it? – I know that there are people who sell and make a living from it. I have taken the best crystals and kept them for myself. It is more for my own part. Only one has done it before Recently, Bøe has taken some focus away from competition and sport climbing more outdoors on rock. He is nevertheless clear that he wants to recreate the feat from last year – namely to take NM gold. – That is the goal. I know that I am the strongest climber. There are a number of strong young people who have made a lot of progress, so they are the ones who could possibly beat me right now. But physically right now, no one is on my level. NM week 2023 NM week 2023 will be held in Trondheim and Stjørdal from 16 to 21 June. You can follow the broadcast on news. After the NM week, the trip goes straight on to a cave three hours from Trondheim. There he will set the stage for something that only one Norwegian has done before him. He is unsure whether it will be with or without the car he has had at his disposal for the past two years. – Doesn’t the lease on the car expire soon, by the way? – Then I have to find a new car or win another competition, he says, laughing.
