11 June 2023 at 15:37 Scotland’s former first minister arrested Scotland’s former first minister Nicola Sturgeon has been arrested in connection with the investigation into the financing of the SNP party, several media reports. While Sky News reports that Sturgeon is in police custody, Reuters writes that a 52-year-old woman has been arrested. Sturgeon turns 53 later this summer. The AFP and BBC news agencies also report that it is Sturgeon who has been arrested. The police write on Twitter that she is being questioned in the case. Sturgeon led the SNP and was Scotland’s First Minister from November 2014 to March this year. Her husband, who has previously been the party’s administrative head, has previously been arrested together with a former SNP treasurer. They were both released without charge pending the further investigation, writes Sky News. The investigation started in 2021 and is linked to how the party has used 600,000 pounds – around NOK 8 million – which was collected to be earmarked for the campaign for Scottish independence. There have reportedly been complaints that the money was used for other purposes. Both Sturgeon’s residence and the party office have been searched as part of the investigation. A camper van worth around NOK 1.3 million was seized outside the house of Sturgeon’s mother-in-law. (NTB/news)
