2 June 2023 at 22:45 At least 80 dead and several hundred injured in train accident The number of people who have lost their lives in a train accident in the state of Odisha in the east of India has increased to at least 80 and around 850 have been injured and sent to hospital, State Secretary of Odisha Pradeep Jena tells the news agency AFP. Several hours after the accident, rescue crews worked to get out several hundred people who were probably stuck in the wreckage of the train carriages. It is feared that many more may be trapped in the trains. It was a Coromandel Express train heading from Shalimar to Chennai that collided with a goods train on Friday. Between ten and twelve train carriages derailed in the accident, and wreckage ended up on nearby tracks. Another passenger train ran into the wreckage, and several carriages derailed there as well.
