A conservative judge in Texas believes that the abortion pill mifepristone should never have been approved and wants the pill to be illegal throughout the United States. Restriction on abortion pills was supposed to come into force on Friday, but was stopped. Thus, the pill can still be used as usual in states that accept it. Mifepristone, also known as RU-486, was developed in the 1980s. The pill was investigated in the US four years before it was included on the FDA’s list of permitted medicines. In France it has been in use since 1987.
