Evacuees in Karlsøy municipality can move home – news Troms and Finnmark

– The way the weather seems to be developing now, the forecasts are that the avalanche danger will decrease. We assess that it is safe to travel in the area, and that it is safe for residents to move home. Operations manager Roy Tore Meyer in the Troms police district tells news that the police have been in contact with Karlsøy municipality, which is now responsible for the residents. The municipalities are responsible for the relocation. Two people on Reinøya died on Friday afternoon in a landslide that took their house. The small village of Grøtnesdalen on the island just north of Tromsø has 30 permanent residents. There should never have been an avalanche right here, but the violent avalanche that went down the mountainside claimed two lives, and a farm with 140 goats. The only areas where evacuation is maintained are in Kildalen in Nordreisa municipality in Nord-Troms. A total of four people died in an avalanche in Troms last Friday. In addition to the tragic avalanche accident on Reinøya, an Italian ski tourist died in Lyngen and a ski tourist from Slovenia died in Nordreisa. One person is still injured after the landslide in Lyngen. On Sunday, three ministers visited landslide areas in Karlsøy and Lyngen. – It is catastrophic. It is strong to see the forces of nature that have come down the mountainside, said Emilie Enger Mehl (Sp) to news. There have also been a number of other avalanches in Northern Norway in recent days.
