Kristoffer Nordhuus Olaussen enjoys himself as a waiter and in the dishes at the restaurant Jotunstogo. The boss thinks he is fantastic, the colleagues inclusive and the customers cheerful. – Lots of nice people. Always someone to talk to. I like that, he says. When Visit Beitostølen posted a Facebook post and asked if any of the cabin owners could consider working a little this summer, Kristoffer thought it might be nice to get away for a bit and try something new. – And to almost get paid to be at the cabin, it’s not a problem, he says happy. ASK FOR SUMMER HELP: This is what the message Visit Beitostølen looked like to the cottage owners in the area. Struggling with recruitment This summer, there are many jobs that are lacking people, not least in the tourism industry and the restaurant industry. MORE PEOPLE ARE EMPLOYED: Nicolay Flaaten says that they have hired more cabin people in the tourism companies at Beitostølen this summer. Photo: Ola Almås Jullumstrø / news – There are many who have been laid off and found other jobs, says Nicolay Flaaten. He works in Visit Beitostølen and is the leader of Beitostølen Booking Service. They had to rethink to get enough labor this summer. They found the solution in the strategy they are working on, where the goal is to connect the business community, the local population and the cottage owners in a better way. – So why not ask the cabin people. They have children and grandchildren, relatives and friends. And housing. The cabin is there, he says. And they got sucked. Now they have summer substitutes in both the tourist companies, restaurants and the sports shop. BEAUTIFUL VALDRES: At Beitostølen in Øystre Slidre municipality, it is a short way to the real high mountains in Jotunheimen. Photo: Ola Almåas Jullumstrø / news This is exactly what the companies at Beitostølen now want to take advantage of; that many of those who have a cabin on Beitostølen are also very happy instead. – They have a lot of competence, are positive people, happy in Beitostølen and a good resource for us, says Nicolay Flaaten. Many of the cabin owners are also involved in the board and care of Beitostølen. – So including the cottage owners as a resource, I think we will continue with that. Great need for summer help According to NHO Reiseliv, hotels, restaurants, festivals and experience companies all over Norway are now looking for summer substitutes. In a recent membership survey, seven out of ten tourism companies answer that they still have vacant summer jobs. This applies to all industries in the tourism industry, including hotels, nightlife, restaurants and experience companies. Photo: Håkon Mosvold Larsen NHO’s tourism manager Kristin Krohn Devold encourages young people and others to help. – If you are looking for a summer job, or do you know any young people who are looking for a job, I would recommend contacting a tourism company. It is the perfect job for those who like to work with people, be creative, provide service and be part of an environment with many different nationalities, she says in a press release. Feels like a holiday 22-year-old Kristoffer is very happy that Visit Beitostølen laid out a bait for the cabin people. It was his mother who tipped about the Facebook post. SUMMER JOB: Kristoffer Nordhuus Olaussen enjoys himself as a waiter at the restaurant Jotunstogo on Beitostølen. Photo: Alexander Nordby – It worked very well for me at least. To go to the cabin and at the same time earn a few kroner; it’s a dream recipe. He thinks that there are probably many cottage owners who have young people who are studying or going to high school and need a summer job. He does not hesitate to recommend it to others. – It’s so nice that I do not have that stubborn work feeling that many may feel during the summer holidays then. I enjoy myself, and when I return to the cabin, it’s a holiday. And it is very delicious, says Kristoffer. SATISFIED: Berit Aspaas Müller runs the restaurant Jotunstogo on Beitostølen. She is very pleased that Kristoffer Nordhuus Olaussen has taken a summer job there. Thus, she has enough employees to drive during the tourist season. Photo: Ola Almås Jullumstrø / news
