It is the first time that the Abel Prize has been awarded to a mathematician from Latin America. He receives the prize for pioneering work with partial differential equations, which can help to understand how nature changes over time, among other things. The prize is NOK 7.5 million, and will be awarded in Oslo on 23 May. The prize is awarded by the Norwegian Academy of Sciences.
