There was an unusual final in the Lytternes novel prize on Saturday afternoon. Leander Djønne was not able to be present to hear his name called out as the author of last year’s best novel, “The Oskespiralen”. Birth and finale Djønne and his wife are expecting their first child, and the due date had passed. Therefore, he had to participate in the final from a car outside Haukeland hospital, while his wife was inside for a check-up. – His girlfriend Tora is also a writer, so she understands the importance of the prize. Could have been worse otherwise, says Djønne. WINNER SELFIE: Leander Djønne has written a dark and raw book, but managed a smile when we asked for a selfie. Photo: Leander Djønne – I didn’t see it coming, was his first comment. – Fantastic. The sane Westerner took off his glasses and wiped his eyes when news’s culture editor Ingerid Nordstrand tore open the envelope and called out his book as the winner of the Lytternes novel prize, which turns 25 this year. While the presenter, jury, audience and the two other finalists were gathered for the broadcast in the Store studio at Marienlyst, Djønne participated on her mobile phone from the roof car park of Haukeland hospital. – It is strange to sit here in the car and not see what is happening on stage. Djønne debuted as a novelist last year, and is otherwise known as a visual artist. In the final, he met another debut author and visual artist, Lars Elling, who was nominated for “Princes of Finntjern”. The last finalist was Trude Marstein (“Own children”). All the six nominated authors received good feedback, but after discussing the six books, the people’s jury voted for Djønne as the winner. – I had to install a seat belt on the chair Djønne’s book “Oskespiralen” was praised by the public jury during the final week for its good language, but also for its originality. – What I find so inspiring is that he is a debutante – and he does it so original, says jury member Toril Taklo. He was also compared to literary greats. – Early in the reading I noted: if Jon Fosse was going to write fantasy, it would have been this, says Jonas Bakken. But the jury also spent time talking about the strong content. DARK BOOK AND GOOD ATMOSPHERE: Einride Berg and Toril Taklo were part of the public jury that chose the winner of the Lytternes novel prize. Photo: Javier Auris / news – This is one of the toughest books I have read – it is brutal, and for the first time in my life I had to take a break after reading 20 pages, says jury member Einride Berg. The same Berg said that the content of the novel made him have to go out and take a shower. – It was just before I had to install a seat belt on my chair, says Berg. When the winner was announced, jury member Gro Berggrabb said: – I think Trude Marstein and Lars Elling’s books have certainly reached many readers. I hope that this award will get Oskespiralen out to more readers. The listeners’ novel prize Photo: Robert Rønning news’s own literature prize. Best known as the P2 listeners’ novel prize. Changed name in 2022. Awarded each year to a Norwegian fiction novel. The nominees are selected by a professional jury. The jury that chooses the winner consists of readers with no special expertise in books other than being very fond of reading. Among the previous winners are Karl Ove Knausgård, Linn Ullmann and Carl FrodeTiller. Dark and raw book with a revenge perspective The book has often been mentioned as dark, both by readers and critics. Beksvart Hardangerbrygg built in stone, wrote news’s critic, but added that the book was a peculiar stone that shone for itself in the Norwegian book harvest. It is a dark and raw book about a family life with violence and abuse on a farm deep in a fjord. There, two twin brothers grow up with a sadistic and cruel father, and a cowed mother. At the beginning of the book, one brother is in prison, while the other lives a deeply Christian family life. The two brothers decide to find together and go to their father’s farm. We will not reveal much more from the plot other than what the author himself has said: – There is a perspective of revenge here, Djønne told us when we interviewed him earlier. Jury member Jonas Bakke had called Jon Fosse’s novel with fantasy elements. From his car, the winner commented on this designation and elaborated: – I myself see it as pyschotic psychedelia. Amalie Skram meets the latest Avatar film. Why did the “Oskespiralen” win? And what did the jury say about the other books?
